The Camargue
During one of our day trips, we took time to visit the Camargue. Located just south of Arles, this preserve is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the two arms of the Rhone River delta. Famous for its wild horses and flamingos, you can also find bulls, boars and tons of birds. It’s the only place in Europe to find flamingos (other than a zoo) with a population that reaches nearly 40,000. The wild Camargue horses are one of the oldest breeds in the world, closely related to the prehistoric horses whose remains have been found elsewhere in southern France. And the semi-wild bulls are raised to square off in the Arles bullring, but more on that later.
