The hills are alive...

One fun thing to do in Salzburg is to visit all the sights from the 1965 movie, “The Sound of Music. As most of you know, the movie is based on the true story of Maria Kutschera and Georg Ritter von Trapp, a decorated Captain of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. After marrying in 1927, the family turned their love of music into a career and began touring in 1935. Shortly after though, the Nazi’s annexed Austria and the family fled to Italy and then the United States. They eventually landed in Stowe, Vermont, where to this day the children run a successful family farm and resort.

Our kids haven’t had a chance to see the movie yet, and we can’t wait to watch it with them. It will be fun to remember all the places in and around Salzburg that we visited.
The picture above and below are from Mirabell Gardens, seen many times in the movie. One of the scenes shows them dancing around Pegasus, the winged horse, singing Do-Re-Mi.
This is the Palace of Leopoldskron, which was depicted as their house in the movie.  You can see the castle in the background.
This was the family's real life home.  After the family fled from the Nazi's, it was purchased by Heinrich Himmler.  He was one of Hiter's top men, in charge of all police (including the Gestapo) and concentration camp matters. Today it is being restored as a future museum.
And of course the famous gazebo.  Here's everyone doing a little acting.  We're such tourists!
