Soccer and Red Bull

Why soccer and Red Bull you might ask? Well in Salzburg, Red Bull is on everything, including the soccer team. The energy drink company was started here by Dietrich Mateschitz (now one of the richest men in the world), and today produces over 3 billion cans in 130 countries. Anyway, Red Bull bought the SV Austria Salzburg team in 2005 and renamed them FC Red Bull Salzburg. They changed everything they could and claimed that FC Red Bull Salzburg was a new team with no history, much to the dismay of many loyal supporters.

This soccer turned out to be very different from the previous matches we’ve attended. The passion remained, but this time with modern amenities. They still have the cage area for visiting fans, in fact this time it didn’t even have seats, but the rest of the stadium was gorgeous. Big screens, concession stands, strolling vendors, gift shops, half-time entertainment, luxury suites, you name it. The stadium, which was one of the host stadiums for Euro Cup 2008, seated 30,000, but tonight had a much smaller crowd. This was a first round qualifier game for the next Euro Cup, but Salzburg had already clinched a place in the next round so the game was meaningless. Slazburg ended up losing 1-0 to FK Suduva.

While touring around town, we also stumbled onto Hangar 7. This is Dietrich's (the Red Bull founder) personal collection of toys. Right across the runway from the airports main terminal, sits his space-age complex of everything from fighter jets and helicopters to Nascar and F1 racecars. It’s free to the public and had Cole in awe.

Salzburg is a great little sports town and was a favorite to host the 2010 Winter Olympics before being upset by Vancouver. Maybe we’ll see the Olympics here in the near future.
