Ancient Rome

Technically almost everything in the historic center of Rome can be considered ancient, but today we explored the true center. Known as the “Forum”, it was once the political, religious, and commercial center of Rome. Everything that was important happened here, and as the empire expanded, these few acres became the center of the civilized world.

The best-known structure still standing is of course the Colosseum. What a magical place for a child’s imagination. In anticipation of our visit, Cole had read several kids’ books about the Colosseum and its gladiators. He was well versed and served as our tour guide for the day.

Conspiring to rule the world?
The floor of the Colosseum is gone which exposes the jumble of underground passages. Animals were kept in cages here and hoisted up in elevators. The gladiator never knew what was coming next or from where. In the end, a staggering estimate of over 500,000 men and over 1 million animals fought to their death.

Nearby Teatro Marcello looks a lot like a baby Colosseum.
