We started with a tour of the massive St. Peter’s Basilica and then went to a special gathering with Pope Benedict XVI himself. We met in the Vatican’s auditorium, which seated about 3,000 people from all over the world. The scene was surprisingly lively with groups trying to out sing each other like a high school pep rally. After giving a general address, the Pope then offered a lengthy Christmas message and blessing in both French, Italian, English, Polish, German, and Spanish.
Since 1506, the Pope has relied on the Swiss Guard for protection. Still wearing the traditional renaissance uniforms, they are the oldest military body in the world.
