Yesterday Cole and I headed about an hour north of Florence to the Mugello Autodromo Racing Circuit. This 3.5 mile, 15 turn facility is owned by Ferrari, and host to some of the top motorcycle and auto races in Europe. This weekend it was the Coppa Italia di Motociclismo. We decided to go the day before the actual race to watch practice and qualifying. This way we were able to wander wherever we wanted including the pits and rooftop terraces. Cole was loving every minute of it. In fact one of his favorite things now is to go to the library, check out the Playstation Moto GP game, and race on the Mugello Circuit.
Along the way we met Luigi who was a sponsor with Triumph motorcycles. He invited us into his sponsor tent for cold drinks and snacks and put Cole on this motorcycle. This particular bike placed 6th at the world championship the previous week by their driver, Mark Aitchison. Cole is hoping to make his own run at the title in a few years.
This was a poster of the track I found. We were told that for some of the bigger races, they’ll have 300,000 to 500,000 fans. Although you can’t really tell in the photo, the track is in a large valley offering lots of hillside seating.
